What is so good about DVD?
DVD holds enough data to store an entire film and a couple of soundtracks,
about 7 Subtitle languages the full theatrical trailer or 2 and sometinmes even
a TV spot, a directors commentry a making of documentary and about an hours
additional footage.

The entire script of the movie is stored separately so you could I imagine
watch a German language verision of an english film and read the subtitle in
Swedish (If you are that way inclined - so DVD Have become useful to language
stundents as a way to grasp syntax and subtleties of languages!)
Yes but dvds trailer should never be watched before the movie - the trailers tend to have the best bits of the film but presented in a different order thereby destroying your perception of the anticipated storyline and giving away the best plot twists.
We spoke briefly about the soundtracks - typically Dolby 5.1 Dolby digital or AC3 as it is known. With 2 small effects speakers either side of the screen handling the left and right sound effects. Then the magic is provided by the two rear speakers - people tend to have them on too quietly - ramp them up and get the benefits of room filling surround sound. You find yourself turning round to see where the spaceship went - at least for the first few times. What about the .1? 6.1 sound introduces a a large centre speaker to handle speech and speech type sound efects and DTS presents and unparalled sound quality allowing much higher sampling rates - do not expect DTS DVD movies to have as many extras on them as the sound information takes up a lot more space! This handles the low frequency effects in the sound and because the human ear cannot take directional information from low bass sounds you only need one speaker and this handles the LFE for the other 5 or 6 speakers this means that the other speakers in your DVD home cinema set up do not have to be as big - or expensive and they just need to handle the higher frequency sound effects - I recommend a minimum of 15watts RMS (Root Mean Square or something like that) for the Satellite speakers and at least 35W RMS for the Woofer - more is always better but make sure the power is rated as RMS because this is the best true measure of sound power..
The Directors commentry on a dvd is always a great insight into how the film was made the problems encountered and the directors aspirations that he would like to have had the budget to introduce into the movie.
The movie format on a DVD is usually as it was in the cinema - on a 16:9 aspect ratio widescreen - this is the closest ratio to what we see naturally so is the choice of cinema directors - when you see a square 4:3 ratio - standard old style TV version you appreciate how much you are missing - hence why widescreen televisions with a 16:9 aspect ratio are really taking off - see our TV link at the top of the page.
