How to Grow Asparagus
Asparagus takes 2-3 years for it to become properly established. Once established you can look forward to the best, fresh asparagus for at least 10years before you need to think about replacing the plants.
Asparagus is generally grown from 1 year old roots known as ‘crowns’.
Plant the crowns 60cm/2′ apart in well drained soil rich in organic matter. A yearly mulch of compost or manure will help your asparagus thrive.
You can grow asparagus in raised beds if your soil tends to get waterlogged.
The attractive fernlike foligae can reach 2-3m (6-10′) high, so make sure you have support strings or wires in place. The height of the foliage might also have a bearing on where you choose to plant it.
Harvesting Asparagus
Harvest from late April to late June. Cut or snap the spears off just above ground level.
It is vital to stop harvesting from late June to allow the folliage to grow and replenish the rootstock.
