Welcome to Fruit and Veg Success
This is a newly launched site designed to help you grow your own fruit, vegetables and herbs and then to enjoy cooking with them. Growing your own fruit and vegetables is great fun, can save you money on food bills and the taste of really fresh produce just can’t be beaten.
We are adding new pages as fast as we can, so please keep coming back to see the latest developments.
You don’t need a large garden or allotment to enjoy growing your own fruit and vegetables. Many varieties of fruit and veg can be successfully grown in pots, grow bags or amongst other plants in the flower border. We even have ideas for what you can grow on your window sill!
You can either select the plant you want to grow from the menu on the left hand side of the page and see if it is recommended for growing in pots or see our article on the most container friendly fruit and veg.
If you are new to growing fruit and vegetables then check out our article on the easiest plants to start with. You may be surprised by how many things you can successfully grow with minimal effort or skill.
Why grow your own fruit and veg?
There are many reasons for doing so, firstly it is great fun and you get a lot of satisfaction planting up and then benefiting from the fruit. Secondly you can’t beat the taste of fresh just picked produced. Even a delay of a day or two diminishes the flavor and nutritional content. You will also have a steady supply of food, and when it comes to salad you can literally just snip off a few leaves and use these leaving the plant to continue to grow.
We aim to show how easy it is to grow your own food. There are some simple tips and any pets or problems you encounter are usually fairly easily dealt with. We cover the common pests and problems and cover the issue of dealing with slugs in some details. (They are our No1 enemy and caused much damage, until we found the best methods of control.)
Some types of food are easier to grow than others and we will highlight the easiest ones and as you get more adventurous you can go on to more advanced and exotic fruits.
If you have a conservatory or glass house there are lots of other options open to you and it is possible to get massive crop yields in a fairly small space.
We cover everything from the very simplest fruits like strawberries which can be grown in a window box to fruit trees including Apples and recently we even had limited success with growing Olives outside in the UK.
As the UK climate gets warmer there are lots of opportunities to experience growing fruits your grand parents never dreamed of growing.
We have had success with Melon, Pumpkins, Plums, Apples, Pears, Olives and Physalis as well as most soft fruits. We have even had good crops of Potatoes and Sweetcorn in small pots on our patio.
We are currently trying the Goji Berry and will report on our success at the end of the season.
