The Royal Horticultural Society guides are an absolutely perfect addition to any gardeners library - I often thumb through my copy for inspiration or to work out just what that plant was that I saw in a stately home or if I need to know what type of tree will go best in my clay soil or in a shady North facing corner. |

My other recommendations are the D G Hessayan's Expert range from be your own lawn expert to becomming your own Rose expert and water garden expert - they are well researched and laid out in a very easy to read manner and provide comprehensive details of common pests and problems that upset every gardener from time to time. The range of "Expert Guides" gave me the following tips:-
For the perfect lawn - mow it weekly
to a height of 3-5 cm it supresses weeds and the grass will grow really thickly
Avoid walking and moving whilst wet.
Feed and water regularly.
Never cut more than 1/3 off in height - the grass becomes shocked and turns
brown
Cylinder Mowers give a cleaner cut that rotary blades which smash the ends of
grass creating brown tufts.
Sand supresses moss - sprinkle in the autumn.
Rake out dead thatch regularly - the soil needs to breathe.
If a rose is dug up another cannot
be put in it's place - each rose secretes a poison into the soil which prevents
any other Rose encroaching on it's space.
Spray with soapy water to rid a Rose or Blackfly or Green Fly infestations.
Setting beer traps for slugs to drown in - they love beer - what a way to go! alternatively using a slugs natural enemy - Nematodes. I am always on the look out for biological pest control methods for my garden so let me know if you have any tips.
If the englishmans home is his Castle then his garden is certainly his refuge - we as a nation are becomming very garden proud as the proliferation in spin off TV programmes is anything to go by. The trick is to create an impressive but low maintainance garden without using pesticides and chemicals. - a good gardener always uses ecologically friendly products.
If you are looking to buy garden products I have mentioned or any I haven't
yet thought of - from lawn movers to compost I heartily recommend the following
store:
Gone gardening is
the site for the avid and not so avid gardener out there. Plenty of gift ideas
and labour saving devices.
