Sound is a pressure wave in the air. To generate more sound, a speaker needs to move more air the cone either has to be bigger or move further.The small size of the Jewel Cube® speaker allowed for only a 2" (5.1 cm) speaker cone to move air so a more powerful motor (voice coil/magnet combination) was required. The solution came by using an improved magnetic material: Neodymium Iron Boron.

Improving a speaker further to enable it to reproduce better sound requires reducing distortion. For the Jewel Cube® speaker engineers, the speaker's small size provided an advantage in this area.

Reproducing higher frequencies requires faster vibration of the speaker cone. For low distortion, the cone should move as a whole. But this increase in the rate of vibration causes irregularities in cone motion. The larger the cone, the lower the frequency at which this phenomenon occurs.

The smaller cone of the Jewel Cube speaker is less susceptible to this symptom.
The unique construction of the Jewel Cube transducer eliminates cone-mounted voice coil leads, reducing these abnormal vibrations and distorted sound.
