The age of a tape player the size of a brick has moved on. Now there's a range of personal stereos out there, to suit everyone's needs, but which one should you buy? MP3? Mini Disc? Or maybe CD? We reviewed a range of portable music players across the range, and here's what we found:

• Cassette players may be one of the oldest types, but they have come a long way. Available now in much smaller sizes, and have many more features.
• Personal CD players have got smaller too, and have gained many extra features, such as anti-shock, and in-line remotes. Some also have radio and MP3 functions.
• MP3 players are small, easy to use and convenient. All you do is connect it to your PC and upload music data straight to it. However, you do lose some sound quality due to the compression of MP3 format.
• Make sure your MP3 player has enough memory, 64mb gives you about an hours listening.
• Mini disc players offer digital music, with instant track changes. Some are recordable, some are playback only.
• Batteries are usually standard sizes, but some offer more compact versions that have to be recharged by mains.
• Look for players made from aluminium, as these are more durable and will last longer.
• In line remotes give you better and easier control over your music. Found usually on the headphone wire itself.
• Programmable players allow you to program the order of tracks you want to hear from one album.
• CD-R/RW compatible? You'll need this if you want to listen to your favourite compilation CD!
• Bass enhancer. This is given a whole load of names, depending on the make and model, but it is generally standard now. It enhances the low end bass frequencies.
• Optical cables are a great way to record digital music quickly and efficiently.
